My name is Barbara
Pijnappel and I am born on the 6th of October 1959. I started making sculptures
in 1987 and 1½ year later I started painting. For some years I
followed painting lessons, given by the painter Don
Nederhand and lessons in modelling with wax and clay given by the
sculptor Joop
te Riele in Apeldoorn.
During the same time I started to work part-time at a foundery
to get experience with the working in bronze. I did that for 7 years.
For also getting experience with sculpturing in stone I followed several
sculpturing courses with the sculptors Peter
Schuijren in Limburg (1994), in the Auvergne in France by Bleu
et Vert in ’95 and ’97 with Gerard van Rooy from Den Bosch
and Marianne
Neve from Leiden. After that came sculptures in several kinds of stone,
such as French limestone, alabaster, soap-stone, marble, dolomite, serpentine
and springstone. In between I have drawn models for a year, together with
a group of artists in my town. In the summer of ’96, still followed
by a short course in aquarelling in Heelsum (Gld.) The last two years
I followed sculpturing courses by marblespecialist Caroline
Teesing and Guus Jooss in Utrecht,
at Artibus in Utrecht and at Campo
Altissimo in Azzano, Italy.
In ’99
and ’00 I worked 2 years together with an international sculpture
group, at galleries and sculpture parks ‘Tem
Veyne’ in Eerbeek (Gld.) and ‘Kunst in de Polder’
in Lisserbroek (NH).
In december 2001, I have, on the invitation of the Spanish foundation
‘Fundaçion
Valparaiso’ worked for a month, in the studios of their artist
residency in Mojacar, Andalucia.
In the course of time I created in bronze a series of nudes, torsos, dancers,
some fairy-tale figures, animals, some magic-realistic sculptures and
a series of religious figures (in assignment). In stone I followed a more
abstract and free shaping.
In between, from ’98-2003 I did, some voluntary activities in Cultural
Centre Gigant in Apeldoorn.
Also I assisted in summer with the Cuba
Festival for them. In 2002 I was member of the sponsorcommittee for
the Artists Studios in Zutphen. An assignment in 2002 came from the Union
of Master-Cooks from Belgium to bring two sculptures for their annual
prize in the Cityhall of Brussels,
for the two best culinary journalists in Belgium. In 2003 I got their
assignment to make a new sculpture for their annual prize for the best
Belgian Master-Cook.
From 1993 until now
I’ve made around 100 exhibitions in Holland, Germany and Belgium
in very good restaurants (such as Michelin
and Alliance) in galleries, in companies,
shops and institutions.
Inspiration to create
a sculpture comes for me from various directions, by a photo or something
I read in a paper or magazine, by a poem or a book, by something in nature
of by a dream. Therefore the subjects can be very different. My aim is
to make good sculptures in a broad range en keep on searching for improving
myself and my sculptures. It’s an endless challenging road to create
after all the ultimate sculpture. In my sculptures I want things as harmony,
movement, tension, volume, game of space- and non space, composition.
They’ve to come up, but stand firm in the same time. It’s
fun to work with contrast in idea and material, for instance the drop
that falls as water, but in the same time stands as a bronze sculpture.
Or the light cloud, that I made in pink portugese marble.
